Ready, Set, Grow!  Workshop Series presents The Year Round Farmer: Growing on the Other Side of the Calendar Season Extension Intensive 1.5 day workshop with guest instructors ASCFG President, flower farmer, and Ednie Flower Bulb Sales Representative Dave Dowling, and The Flower Hat farmer florist Julio Freitas, who will offer design instruction. The workshop will take place Sunday, August 12 through Monday, August 13, 2018. Early-bird pricing is available through June 30 at $xxx, after that date, the cost is $xxx. (final pricing information coming soon!) Seating is limited to only 12 individuals!

This intensive workshop offers the trifecta of production, design, and marketing for the small to medium size flower farmer florist.  An integral component to Urban Buds flower farming production is the use of season extension technologies. This workshop is ideal for farmers wishing to extend their growing season.

This workshop will cover:

  • selecting the appropriate technology for you
  • walk-in caterpillar tunnel building demo
  • variety selection, sourcing and scheduling
  • winter irrigation
  • IPM
  • extreme weather  proofing

The design portion of this workshop will be lead by our friend Julio Freitas of The Flower Hat of Bozeman, MT.  In addition to design, he will also address marketing off-season blooms and successful marketing through Instagram.

Dave Dowling grew cut flowers in Montgomery County, MD for 20 years. He served as the Mid-Atlantic Regional Director of the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers (ASCFG) from 2002-2004, and served as president from 2006-2009. He was the Industry Liaison from 2014-2015, and is again currently president of the ASCFG. With field, high tunnel, and greenhouse production, Farmhouse Flowers & Plants produced cut flowers year round. Most of the flowers raised were sold at farmers markets, including two year round markets in the Washington, DC area. Flowers were sold direct to florists from Baltimore to Washington, DC through Capital Flower Growers, LLC, a cooperative formed with two other flower growers in 2013. Early in 2014, Dave closed his cut flower business and began working at Ednie Flower Bulb, which is now a division of Fred C Gloeckner & Co. He keeps busy as a sales rep and advisor to cut flower growers across the country with small to medium sized farmers. Dave also oversees the warehouse/shipping department at Ednie.

Julio Freitas is a flower farmer and floral designer located in Bozeman, Montana, where he operates The Flower Hat. With work featured in Harper's Bazaar, Elle Decor, Magnolia Rouge, Flower Magazine, Style Me Pretty and many others, Julio credits his successful career to his unique style of floral design that incorporates locally grown flowers and foraged botanical elements.
